Some facts about WHY we need YOU!

The emergency need for lifesaving blood continues this summer. The American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries rise and deplete the nation’s blood inventory.

· The Red Cross continues to distribute more blood products to hospitals across the country compared to the same time last year. In recent months, the Red Cross has sent 12% more blood products to hospitals to help patients in need, including higher distributions to hospitals in areas where the pandemic continues to disrupt normal blood collection operations.

· Hospitals continue to see patients who previously deferred care during the COVID-19 pandemic present with more advanced disease progression and are also responding to an atypically high number of traumas and emergency room visits.

· Twenty to 40% of trauma deaths that occur after hospital admission involve massive hemorrhaging, and doctors need a secure blood supply to fight the odds. To save a life in these dire circumstances, hospitals may need hundreds of blood products depending on the severity of the trauma.

Safety is a top priority for the Red Cross. Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center has always followed the highest standards of safety and infection control. During this pandemic, the Red Cross has additional precautions in place to ensure the safety of our employees, volunteers and donors, including:

  • Requiring face masks and social distancing for unvaccinated individuals.

  • Providing hand sanitizer for use before entering the drive, as well as throughout the donation process.

  • Continuing enhanced disinfecting of surfaces and equipment.

  • Emphasizing the importance of appointments to help manage the flow of donors at drives.
